Introduction

PAudio speakers are made by one of the largest professional audio speaker companies in the world. I learned recently that they are also the largest producer of speaker voicecoil assemblies anywhere. But no one has discovered that they are also among the finest home audio speakers. Only Lowther full-range speakers from England, or our own Audio Nirvana speakers, can be compared with the various PAudio coaxial models (click here).

But the PAudios can do things that 8 inch Lowthers cannot. PAudio power and dynamics are unrivaled.....not just by Lowthers, but by any other speaker in the world, at any price. The build quality is so superb and the magnets so heavy, that it is difficult for most people to even pick up the larger speakers (nearly 40 lbs each).......and that's without any cabinet. Many of the woofers will handle 600 watts RMS. And the larger tweeters have 2 inch throats and will handle 100 watts RMS.

We've heard most of the world's so-called greatest speakers--Wilson Grand Slamm, JM Labs Grande Utopia, Genesis 1, Dynaudio Evidence, etc. (all over $50,000/pr). None of these speakers come close to PAudios in a properly designed enclosure. It sounds ridiculous, but it's true. The PAudios just sound more like real music--like real people singing--than in these very expensive multidriver speakers.

A Little Bit About Ourselves

We're not just a business. We love music as much as you do. Our goal is to make great sound affordable for everyone.

We honestly feel that the Audio Nirvana, Lowther, PAudio, and Fostex speakers we sell are the finest in the world at any price.

Why Buy From Us?

Because of our experience with pointsource speakers.

We have been building speakers using full-range, coaxial, and triaxial speakers for more than 15 years.

What Do We Offer?

PAudio coaxial speakers with free cabinet construction plans, a parts list, wiring diagram, and setup tips from $295/pr

Why Are PAudio Coaxial Speakers So Good?

1. PAudio speakers are 'pointsource'.

--Imaging and soundstage are incredible because the sound comes from a single point in space.

2. PAudio speakers use huge magnets.

--Clarity, detail, accuracy, extension and realism are unmatched because of precise control of the cone and compression horn diaphram.

3. PAudio speakers are precision made with heavy, cast frames and stiff paper cones.

--Distortion is almost nonexistent and power handling is unmatched.

4. PAudio speakers are among the most efficient speakers in the world (over 100 db).

--They present a very easy load for any amplifier.

5. PAudio speakers--in our designs--use only a single capacitor for a crossover.

--The sound is as pure as possible and the speaker can be matched to your room by proper selection of the right capacitor..

The Magic Switch

One big advantage of a coaxial speaker is that the compression horn tweeter is separate from the woofer--but still coaxially located for pointsource sound. Because of this, it is possible to use different value capacitors to control the point at which the tweeter begins to play. Doing so can change the sound from 'soft, warm, and smooth' to 'clear, bright, and detailed'. You can do this manually by wiring in capacitors of different values. Or you can use the above 'single pull, triple throw' high quality switch to wire up three different capacitors at the same time. Select whichever one best suits the recordings you're listening to. It's like having three different speakers. This is not an 'L-pad' which just turns the tweeter volume up or down. This switch changes the crossover point to completely change the nature of the speaker. This is a 6 amp, high current, very high quality microswitch. We have them available for sale for $40/pr or $50/pr including three pairs of audio grade capacitors.

Model Range

We have evaluated all of the many PAudio coaxial speakers, over a period of many months, in ten different sizes and types of enclosures. We selected the eight best models to offer to our customers. These eight will cover almost any application and any budget.

The main variables are the size and acoustics of your listening room (i.e., how 'live' or 'dead' the room is), the types of music you listen to, your preferences regarding detail versus smoothness, and the electronics you intend to use your speakers with.

In addition to the question of which speaker is best for you, there is also the question of selecting the best capacitor. The value of this capacitor determines at what frequency the tweeter begins to play. It is essential to get this right so that it blends correctly with the woofer.

Though we offer 8 different models, the differences are not as great as they might first appear. Excluding the smallest 8 inch model, we really only sell two different 'types' of PAudio coaxial speakers. One type, the CXA series, uses a smaller 2.5 inch voicecoil and one inch throat compression driver. The other type, the CX38 series, uses a massive 4 inch voicecoil and two inch compression driver.

After 15 years of experience, we can recommend the combination that's best for you.

Which Speaker Should You Choose?

There are two main criteria in selecting the best PAudio speaker for you. One, what size PAudio will fit in the cabinet size you want? And, two, how much detail, bass, and dynamics do you want?

Efficiency is so high--in all models--that you can pretty much ignore this variable. If your amplifier won't play these PAudio speakers, it won't be able to play any other speaker.

Generally speaking, a bigger speaker (and/or one with a bigger magnet) will give you more detail, more bass, and more dynamics.

All of our smaller enclosure designs will only accept the 8 inch speakers. Our best floorstanding enclosure, the '2.8', will accept 8, 10, or 12 inch speakers. Our Open Baffle will work with any size PAudio speakers, though the larger ones work better. We also have plans for larger bass reflex cabinets in 5, 8, and 13.6 cubic feet for the 10, 12, 15 and 18 inch models.

Our Enclosures

We offer many different cabinet designs for PAudio speakers. You can purchase 'Open Baffle' speakers complete. For any of the other designs, we offer free plans, parts list, setup tips, and wiring diagram.

Our 'Open Baffle' speakers are made of 3/4 inch industrial grade, pre-veneered particle board, with beautifully radiused solid wood corners. We use Grade A oak veneers because they have the most beautiful and elaborate grain. The 'Open Baffle' is veneered on all surfaces except the back. The only available finish is rosewood/cherry stain. A light lacquer finish is applied so no upkeep is required.

Which Enclosure Should You Choose?

Generally speaking, a well designed larger enclosure will always sound better than a well designed smaller enclosure. If you have the space and can afford it, we recommend going with a larger design.

The 'Open Baffle' enclosures mount the largest and most powerful PAudio speakers. Traditionally, the problem with 15 and 18 inch speakers is that they require enormous bass reflex cabinets to produce their best sound. In today's homes, these are rarely acceptable to most people (especially the wives!). The answer is our 'Open Baffle'.

We have experimented with open baffle enclosures for years but never recommended them. The problem was that 8, 10, and 12 inch speakers just don't make enough bass in open baffles to be satisfying for most people. Since we have never before sold speakers larger than 12 inches, we did not offer an open baffle type of enclosure.

However, the 15 and 18 inch PAudio speakers make so much bass, that a bass reflex enclosure is no longer necessary. These speakers give truly satisfying performance in an open baffle type of design. However, we should note that even these speakers--in open baffles--do not produce really low bass. Below 63 cycles, they begin to roll off. That's the nature of not having a 'box' to help the bass. But it is very easy to add a quality subwoofer to supplement the lowest octaves. That said, most people do not find this necessary with the PAudio's.

The '2.8' enclosures are our largest and best sounding bass reflex designs to date for the smaller speakers. We have two versions. The original 'Series I' has a wide front baffle, but is not as deep. The 'Mk II' has a thin front baffle, and is deeper. The difference is mainly in the styling. We also offer a 'Big Port' version of the 2.8. This offers more mid bass at the expense of some low bass output.

If you do have size limitations but still want a floorstanding system, we would recommend the '1.3'. It has maybe 10% less bass than the 2.8 models but--for most people--this is more than enough.

The 'Minimonitor' is really our smallest stand-alone system. It has full bass and dynamics and a satisfying overall balance. It has about 10% less bass than our '1.3.'

The 'Micromonitor' was designed primarily as a surround speaker for home theater. It still makes a nice 'extension' speaker for small rooms. And it is the best computer speaker you ever heard! It can be supplemented with a subwoofer for more bass output.

What Our Customers Have to Say

"In real world A/B comparisons, no speaker rivals the PAudios in "realism, clarity, accuracy, speed, truth of timbre, lack of distortion, phase accuracy, time delay, imaging, soundstage, and efficiency". I have personally heard Lowther drivers, which are nearly equal in everyway to the PAudios, except for the great amount of bass and dynamics that these PAudios can produce. This is the ONLY system I have heard that actually creates a 'holographic' 3D soundstage from a stereo source. The singer is actually in the room, along with all the other instruments, exactly where they are supposed to be--as if you were sitting first row center at a concert. At times I forget I am listening to speakers at all, its an amazing experience."--Scott Wertheim

"I set up the speakers last night. I was floored, for the next few hours, as I started to hear things on my records that I hadn't heard before. As far as power is concerned, the 1.3 cabs are more than ample for my 14 by 14 room. The presence and multidimensionality in the music are nothing I experienced with any system I've used earlier. Also, the switches are perfect for the variation in recordings. Many, many thanks."-- Daniel Lobanovsky

"Well, I've run up about 200 hours on the PAudio 18's so far, and the difference between them and any other speaker I've heard is staggering. Everything you said about these speakers is absolutely true. I won't be needing a sub as I find the bass output to be more than adequate, and the magic switch is indeed magic. I can't thank you enough."--Lance Weaver (from New Zealand)

"I am very satisfied with my set-up. The Arcam Solo drives the the PAudios easily and the capacitor configuration you built works well in the middle position. I found your website early on, in my months long research project on speaker design. I decided early on that I wanted a point source solution and I found myself going back to your site over and over again. The price/value frankly appears too good to be true, but the quality speaks for itself. Anyone considering your products should buy with complete confidence."--James Derby

"After months of silence, I thought I'd send you an update. First off, I REALLY like the PAudio's. Now, I have to make the cabinets look as good as they sound! My father has been in the audio industry (mostly high-end) for 40+ years. Growing up with him, going on to work in a few audio stores, and because speaker building is a hobby of mine, I can say that I have easily heard hundreds of speakers. It is my opinion that the PAudio coaxials are among the best sounding speakers - at any price. Thanks again for all your advice and for the speakers! It's been fun!"--Chad Phillips

"The detail is super. Time has given the speakers a sweetness that is just so pleasing to listen to. Overall, these PAudio speakers are great. At the price you sell them, what a steal. When I tell listeners that I made these speakers, jaws drop. When I tell them what I paid for the drivers, they don’t believe me!"--Rob Parkhurst

"Now after listening to some "Yello" and Peggy Lee , along with some friends , you couldn't pay me to return them...they are now the reference speakers in my collection."--Les Hudson

"The PAudio 8 Minimonitor.....is a GREAT speaker.....rest assured, I'm SO impressed that I'll be buying more drivers.....and plans.....to build some "boxes" myself...."--W. Gordon Ray

"There is something very special going on here. They exhibit a very competent presentation across a broad range of complicated, demanding recordings, with no hint of congestion or over extension. I find that I can listen deeper into the mix, and hear things that were hidden before. Another very pleasing observation is that this.....produces a rather large sweet spot. In fact, it's not accurate to call it a sweet spot at all. You can almost walk around the room and get a feel for instrument placement."--Geoff Daniels

"The 8's, when I built them, were the most detailed sounding speakers I had ever owned. It's not like listening to boxes, as so many of my previous speakers sounded. For the money, these 8's couldn't be touched by anything I had heard for ten times the cost.

Then you sent me an email that mentioned the CX38 series. That left me wanting to know what I could be missing. The 8's were the best sounding speakers, by far, that I had owned and very few sounded better at any price that I had heard.

It has been a very enjoyable journey. I am loving these 15's. I am listening to more types of music, as everything sounds so wonderful. Jazz is so special, just like they are in the room with you.

My daughter came home from college and found me listening to some jazz with a female voice on it. She said she could hear someone singing and expected to see someone standing in the room singing, not a recording. She then said that see could see the singer if she closed her eyes. She sat down next to me and just listened to the rest of the song. She couldn't believe how real it sounded. It's like being in the jazz session with them.

How did you ever find these PAudio drivers? What a find."--Rob Parkhurst

"Absolutely bloody brilliant!"--Theo Hajicosta (from Australia)
